Mathias Koch
Completed a degree in drums at the conservatory of Vienna. Performances in Austria in the Szene Wien, Porgy&Bess, Jazz Fest Wien, Klezmore Festival Wien, Glatt & Verkehrt in Krems, Jazzfestival Saalfelden amongst others; in Germany (Moers Festival, “Frischzelle” Köln and Düsseldorf, Triennale Köln, tff Rudolstadt), Switzerland, Hungary, Luxembourg, Italy and Slovenia. He recorded for television and radio broadcasts (ORF, WDR, etc.), as well as CD productions with the band Nifty’s (“Takeshi Express”, “Naftalarasa”), the Maja Osojnik Band (“Crne Vode”), Hannes Löschel’s “Herz.Bruch.Stück”, Hannes Löschel’s “Songs of Innocents”, the Low Frequency Orchestra, the Wienerlied-duo Die Strottern as well as many others. Numerous children’s theatre productions with the ensemble TTT and Lukas Thöni (“Draußen bei den Farben”)
Collaborations include Phil Minton, Wolfgang Mitterer, Hannes Löschel, Burkhard Stangl, Achim Tang, Christian Reiner, Clayton Thomas, Lukas Thöni and Daniel Riegler.
As a drummer he is influenced by Jazz, Free Funk, Rock and free improvisation. His dynamic style of playing moves freely between tone painting, delicate rhythm patterns and ecstatic funk and rock grooves. His joy for improvising with the possibilities of sound, as well as his energetic live performances and his drive for innovation define him as a player.
